Hostelling International USA (registered as American Youth Hostels, Inc.) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization founded in 1934 to promote international understanding of the world and its people through hostelling. HI-USA operates more than 100 hostel accommodations throughout the United States. Hostels provide friendly, inexpensive overnight accommodations for travelers, assuring the utmost in cleanliness, security and service - and best of all - at an inexpensive rate.
Hostels range from urban high-rise buildings with hundreds of beds to small hostels in rural settings. Known for their dormitory-style rooms, providing separate quarters for men and women, still many hostels offer private family or couples' rooms. All hostels provide a blanket and pillow, plus other linens are either included in the price or available for rental. Many also invite you to bring your own sleeping bag or linens.
Most hostels offer fully equipped self-service kitchens or cafeterias, dining areas, secure storage and common rooms for relaxing and socializing with other travelers. Some hostels have laundry facilities, travel libraries and concierge service. There are a few that even have hot tubs, swimming pools, barbecues and an ocean at its front door. Most urban hostels have secure 24-hour access and are handicapped accessible.
HI-USA is also associated with 34 councils throughout the U.S., which provide local members and visitors with a wide range of special programs, events, trips and activities. Click here to learn more about hostelling.
