On the rugged California coast, about 25 miles south of San Francisco, stands the Montara Point Historic Lighthouse. A fog signal was built on this site in 1875 and the light tower was added atop these 70 foot cliffs in 1900. The lighthouse, and its turn-of-the-century keeper buildings , have been preserved and restored by Hostelling International-AYH and the California Department of Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with the Coast Guard.
The Hi-Point Montara Lighthouse hostel offers private rooms, as well as dorm lodging. One of the private rooms, overlooking a small beach, makes a inexpensive, romantic get-away for those who enjoy the simple life! No frills or luxurious bedding, but all the beauty you could ask for in the awesome panoramic views of the ocean and rocks below. The views are expecially spectacular on a starry night with the moonlight shimmering on the waves!
